BMBF workshop "Establishment and Expansion of Joint Research Structures in Europe – Taking stock and looking beyond the BMBF call of 2014"

In December 2015, the kick-off workshop for the funding announcement 'Building and Expanding Joint Research Structures in Europe' signaled the launch of a total of 16 projects under a new and unique funding instrument of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Now, about three years on, the ministry intends to evaluate this funding measure and discuss possible future activities with the participants from science, research and administration.

On 15 December 2014 the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) published a funding announcement on 'Building and Expanding Joint Research Structures in Europe'.

The kick-off workshop from 16 to 17 December 2015 in Bonn under the same title marked the launch for a total of 16 projects under a new and unique financing instrument of the BMBF.

The funding announcement of the BMBF aimed to support research institutions, universities and (researching) companies from Germany to develop knowledge and innovation potential in less research-intensive regions in Europe and to play a leading role in cooperation with partners from these target regions. At the same time, it was meant to promote their compatibility with the European Research Area and reduce the innovation gap within Europe.

About three years after the kick-off event, the BMBF now intends to evaluate this funding measure in a joint workshop with the project leaders and their international partners, representatives of the respective science and research ministries in the partner countries as well as external experts. In this constellation, they will also discuss potential future activities.
