The conventional approach to wastewater has been to collect water and sludge and bring it to a central point for treatment and disposal. The view is gaining ground that decentralization offers a strong alternative because it makes wastewater management more people-centered by emphasizing the role of households, communities and decentralized municipal structures in wastewater management. The state of pollution of rivers and water bodies, big and small, shows that conventional, centralized approaches to wastewater management have generally failed to address the needs of communities for the collection and disposal of domestic wastewater and faecal sludges.
This collaborative workshop will demonstrate that the use of decentralized systems such as the Rotating Biological Contactor or Septic Tanks are suitable technologies for the protection of water resources. The objective of the workshop is to build capacity and awareness of DECENTRALIZED system as a viable option for wastewater management to provide a cost-effective means for treating wastewater. Experts drawn from various sectors such as water and wastewater treatment professionals, government, scientists and economists would address the issue.
